Fractional CFO or Controller? A Guide for Austin Founders

When your startup starts growing, finance questions tend to arrive together. Can you afford the next hire? Why does the monthly close take so long? What information will investors ask for? It is tempting to solve all three by hiring a CFO, but they may call for different kinds of support.
For an Austin founder building a finance team, the useful starting point is the work that needs an owner. Titles matter less than clear responsibilities and dependable information.
Start with the decision you cannot make today
Write down the next three decisions your business needs to make and the information missing from each one. A hiring decision may need a cash forecast. A board meeting may need consistent financial reporting. A backlog of uncategorized transactions may need accounting capacity before either is possible.
This short exercise helps separate a capacity problem from a reporting problem or a strategic planning problem. Many growing businesses have a combination.
Accounting keeps the underlying records current
Day-to-day accounting includes recording transactions, reconciling accounts, and keeping information about receivables and payables organized. These records provide the inputs for reporting and planning.
If the books are behind or basic balances cannot be explained, start by understanding that backlog. A forecast built on incomplete records can create misplaced confidence. Ask who owns each recurring task, when it is completed, and how questions are resolved.
